What are the checked baggage regulations for domestic airlines?

All of the major airlines that Allcases surveyed have the same basic rules. All allow up to 2 checked bags, some airlines allow 3.

The allowed maximum size and weights are consistent across the airlines:
First piece: The total of L + W + H cannot exceed 62" 70lbs.
Second piece: The total of the L + W + H cannot exceed 55" and 70lbs.
Third piece: The total of the L + W + H cannot exceed 45" and 70lbs.

If you have an oversize or overweight bag, every airline treats it differently, but for bags over 70lbs. you will be charged a penalty fee, while bags over 100lbs. must be sent as cargo.

What are the checked baggage regulations for international airlines?

What are the regulations for UPS?
Maximum weight is 150lbs.; greater than 70lbs. is considered heavy weight and surcharges apply. Maximum length is 130" which is length plus girth. Girth equals (2xW + 2xH). UPS also charges for oversized packages. A package is considered oversize if it measures more than 84" in length, width and height. UPS has a different set of regulations for international shipment. Consult UPS for details.

What are the regulations for FedEx?
Federal Express will ship a package of almost any size and weight, but like UPS they have "heavy weight" surcharges for packages that exceed 108" in length or 130" in length + girth. For heavy or oversized shipment, it is suggested that you contact 1-800-go-fedex for details.
